U.S. Senator Cory Booker to Visit Las Ventanas at Summerlin on May 7 for Fireside Chat

LAS VEGAS – U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and his mother, Carolyn, will host a special Mother’s Day weekend gathering and fireside chat on Saturday, May 7 from 1 – 2:30 p.m. at Las Ventanas at Summerlin, Nevada’s only not-for-profit continuing care active adult community. Former KLAS-TV, Channel 8 anchor and mistress of ceremonies Paula Francis will moderate the fireside chat, which will touch on topics that include legacy, public service and Senator Booker’s unique life journey.

The virtues of public service and paying it forward are at the core of Booker’s New York Times bestselling book, “United,” as are the lessons of social justice, compassion and solidarity passed down to him by his mother, father, grandmother and aunt.

“Both Bookers have established an impressive legacy of public service,” said Jonathan Boyar, executive director of Las Ventanas at Summerlin. “That is why we are so excited to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend with Senator Booker and his mother, Carolyn, who is a valued member of our community.”

A graduate of Stanford University, Yale Law School and a Rhodes Scholar, Booker was elected to the Newark City Council in 1998 at the age of 29. In 2006, he was elected Mayor of Newark, and served for more than seven years until his election to the U.S. Senate on Oct. 16, 2013. In 2014, Booker was re-elected to a full six-year term. As New Jersey’s junior Senator, Cory Booker has brought an innovative and bipartisan approach to tackling some of the most difficult problems facing New Jersey and our country.

Carolyn Booker, currently a resident of Las Ventanas at Summerlin, is a graduate of Fisk University in Nashville. Carolyn and her late husband, Cary, were among the first black executives at IBM. She has been involved with activism her entire life, modeling for Cory and his brother a life of public service. Carolyn was a civil rights activist who served on the planning committee for and volunteered at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. After Carolyn and Cary partnered with the Fair Housing Council to buy a home in Bergen County, New Jersey, she became involved as a volunteer with the organization and remains active to this day. Carolyn has also volunteered on every one of Cory’s campaigns and maintains strong ties to the senior community in Newark.

The Bookers’ visit to Las Ventanas at Summerlin marks the Las Ventanas Foundation’s first legacy society event of the year to raise awareness about the importance of public service. The Las Ventanas Foundation has established an endowment fund, which will support Las Ventanas at Summerlin residents who outlive their assets.

Following the fireside chat, there will be a Q&A session and meet-and-greet with Las Ventanas at Summerlin residents and guests.
